Okay guys, who needs some positive updates after last night? I’m going to do a VC on Spring Ball Eve. I’ll be in Orlando with the family, so I’m doing it at 10:00 pm Eastern / 8:00 pm Mountain.
I’ve got some stories for you guys and some really good things to know before spring ball. This is some of what I’ll be covering in that Discord VC:
• Punt return / kick return
• WR lineups
• Possible position changes
• Battle for LT
• DE lineups
• The freshmen
• QB2 battle
• Secret new coaches
Let me share one story real quick here. I had Paki Finau in the podcast studio. I really like him as a person and as a player. He played in nearly every game at UW last year and started in four or five of them. He is the real deal from an eye test, and he and I already have plans to crush some sushi and do the Chubby’s challenge with Justin and Tiger.
But here is my favorite part of my time with him. He is super interested in and having a good time learning more about BYU and the church. He said Zak Yamauchi has been teaching him about the LDS faith. Paki told me he has tons of relatives and friends in the faith but that he didn’t know much. When he told Zak that, Zak told him, “No worries, I’ll teach you everything and just convert you.” Paki told me he laughed at that but also said, “Well yeah, I’m down.”
I think that’s a great story—not just from a missionary standpoint, but also from a team-bonding and culture standpoint. Both of them are new to the program. Both played tackle in high school. There is a very coveted LT spot open this spring. But the culture under Kalani is to love and learn—which means loving the teammates around you and pushing each other to be better.
They’re new here, but the coaches found guys who fit the culture, and they have already embraced it. This reminds me of last year when Bear came in and all the QBs stepped up to help him learn things and get adjusted to life in Provo—even though they were all competing for a coveted P4 QB position that will get paid millions over the next few years. You don’t see that culture many places where seven figures are on the line.
I’m telling you guys: what Kalani has built here is elite and unique. I think we see him keep building, and we are in for some great football ahead!
I have some other cool little stories to share that’ll definitely lighten up our moods after watching that basketball “game” last night.
Anyway, I think there are some awesome things happening in our program, and even with lots of returning talent, we have lots of intriguing storylines in spring ball to watch.
I think we are in a unique position to get you guys some great coverage of spring ball, and historically we have. I’d love to be able to have more time to bring insights and stories like this more often. I’m going to keep trying to find time to do it and grow this thing. Someday I do think we will have tens of thousands of subscribers, and maybe I can make this a higher priority in creating content and helping players.
I appreciate all the people who have been with us for years and all the new people. If you like what we do, share it with friends. I’ll make this free so you can share it with everyone. But as always, the VCs, saunas, and my best takes will be behind our paywall in order to best help the players. You all are the best fans in college sports. Go Cougs!!
